Water Maintenance Worker I

Job Description:

THIS POSITION IS AN ON-CALL POSITION - SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST LIVE WITHIN AN 10 MILE RADIUS OF THE HWY 49/HWY 412 INTERSECTION

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PMU maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of a violation can be found in the PMU Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY: Repairs and maintains water mains and services

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Ability to use safe work practices to protect yourself and your team.

Connects water services by tapping on the water mains.

Performs maintenance on water meters by replacing meters, repairing meter leaks, cleaning meter boxes, replacing box lids, repairing leaks and replacing boxes.

Locates water lines and leaks in private and public lines.

Water main construction including fire hydrant and values.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform or be taught each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or up to six months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole

numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent,

and to draw and interpret construction drawings. 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out simple one-step or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be able to read and understand maps and charts. General knowledge on emailing, using calendars, reports, Microsoft Word and Excel, and must have the ability to input data and retrieve information using a terminal, PC, IPad or other keyboard devices.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Driver's License; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one (1) year

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee must have the ability to work in confined spaces (the employee is required to have an attendant for all determined confined spaces and must follow the PMU safety procedures regarding such spaces).  The employee should be able to perform well in groups or alone.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
