Mechanic I

Job Description:

This position performs minor and major mechanical maintenance and repairs to utility equipment and vehicles.

 

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PMU maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of violation can be found in the PMU Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY: Performs minor mechanical maintenance and repairs without supervision and major mechanical repairs with supervision and assistance to ensure proper performance and safety of utility equipment and vehicles and keeps proper records of repairs made.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Assists employees with their maintenance needs by providing good internal customer service.

Helps evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.

Helps with rebuilding, replacing, or repairing major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.

Checks and repairs minor electrical and cooling systems issues and installs vehicle accessories.

Helps with metal work including welding, cutting, and fabricating.

Helps with analyzing engine performance and performs tune-ups as needed.

Performs routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care including changing oil, filters, batteries, bulbs, hydraulic fluid, tire rotation, etc.

Maintains accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.

Operates tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.

Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.

Follows established safety inspection protocol and schedule.

Ensures shop, equipment, and tools are clean and in safe operating condition.

Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

Maintains accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.

Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mechanics are required to provide their own set of tools to perform the required duties.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Knowledge of fuel engine maintenance and minor repairs.  Knowledge of diesel engines preferred.  Help diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform repairs with assistance.  Experience with heavy equipment maintenance and repairs preferred.  Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair.  Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.  Knowledge of basic hydraulics and fabrication experience preferred. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or minimum 5 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience and education.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret wiring and parts diagrams.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Driver’s license; Obtain Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) year from date of eligibility within the company, if deemed necessary.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
